The slowest mammal in the rainforest also has a handshake that would put your deadlift to shame. And the really unsettling part isn't how hard a sloth grips while it's alive. It's that the grip keeps working after it isn't.

Is a sloth's grip really stronger than a human's?

A three-toed sloth grips about twice as hard as a human does, pound for pound, according to a 2022 study of the brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) published in the Journal of Zoology by Young and colleagues. The team measured animals at a Costa Rican sanctuary and found a sloth can hold more than 100% of its own body weight with a single hand — try that on a pull-up bar and let me know how it goes.

Here's where the sources start arguing, which is the fun part. The peer-reviewed number is roughly twice a human's proportional grip. But a lot of conservation groups and science blogs cite three times stronger than the average person. A sloth hangs for 10 to 20 hours a day on almost no muscle at all, because it barely uses any. Muscle makes up only 25 to 30% of a sloth's body weight, versus 40 to 45% in most mammals its size — so it's carrying roughly 30% less muscle than it "should" and still out-gripping a gym full of humans.

The trick is that it isn't really gripping. A sloth's claws grow up to about four inches long and curl into permanent hooks, and a tendon-locking mechanism cinches them shut without the muscles doing any active work. Naturalists have reported wild sloths that died while suspended and simply stayed hanging there, held up by those long curved fingers with no living effort behind it.
