Somewhere in a Costa Rican tree right now, a sloth is hanging upside down and doing nothing, and it's doing it on purpose. Not because it's tired. Because doing nothing is the whole plan. Here's how an animal built its entire survival strategy around the rest day.

How does a sloth survive doing almost nothing all day?

A three-toed sloth survives by burning almost no energy in the first place — it runs on roughly 110 calories a day, one of the lowest energy outputs ever measured in a mammal. That's a couple bites of a granola bar. For a whole animal. All day.

The trick is that a sloth eats mostly leaves, and leaves are a terrible deal — low calories, hard to break down, sometimes mildly toxic.
